Reflection
Most of my volunteer hours are correlated with an elementary school classroom. I wanted a lot of volunteer hours in an actual classroom to ensure that I was getting lots of practice in for my future teaching practice. I got to observe, and work with three incredible teachers, that all have a different teaching style. I was able to work with grade ones, grade six, and grade eight. It was an incredible experience being able to work with different age groups, as teaching is very different in those stages.
Cultivating Community Leaders was a program in my home town that helped people who did not have a lot of income. We would help run food bank programs, and we were able to learn more about the politics within our community.
My friends sister was struggling with some health issues, and was in and out of the hospital for roughly a year. Her mom was finding it difficult to keep up with the finances due to everything, so my family and I decided to do a bottle drive to help raise some money to help pay off any financial debt. The bottle drive lasted one full day, and for a small town I was very proud of everyone’s contribution. We raised just over a grand to help their family.
Overall, all of my volunteer experience has helped me grow as an educator. I was able to work with different ages of children while using different teaching techniques, I was able to learn more about my community while giving back, and I was able to learn that a community can really come together in a time of need. These are attributes that I want in my classroom. I want to help my students become productive, helpful, compassionate members in their community. With my past experiences I will be able to help mentor my students.
